Travel Photography is a genre of photography that involves the documentation of an Area, Landscape, People, Culture, Custom or History with no geographical limitations. Travel Photography is most open in terms of the subjects it covers. It is quite expensive, challenging & hostile form of Photography
- Wake up early & stay out late is the fundamental in Travel Photography. Light is most important ingredient for great photography – and soft, warm, morning light creates amazing images
- Sunsets are also great and hour before sunset is considered as Golden hour because of its soft, warm tone & eye pleasing shadows. The Sunny day is probably the absolute worst time for Travel Photography
- It is advisable to do Pre – Trip Location Scouting – do some research & plan the locations, must gather knowledge
- Connect & talk to people to understand them, their culture, their rituals, their liking & disliking’s. Take permissions & compliment them before & after the shoot. Learn & use local language to communicate effectively
- Pay attention to details, subject, background & entire composition. You can experiment with your composition, use angles & different distances, get closer, and start with wide shots. Never get satisfied with one image
- Include foreground, midground & background elements to fill your frame
- Use of lightweight Tripod is highly recommended to avoid handshake, camera shake.
- Always carry a camera around; you don’t know when you get a serendipitous moments – a random street performance, brilliant pink sunset or a rare animal, vehicle while you are passing an area
- Use Zoom Lens for Travel Photography. The best lenses are 70-200 mm and 75-300 mm lens.
- For Travel Photography keep the ISO low (for less sensor noise)
- Use Small apertures so more of the image is in focus
- Shoot in RAW format to capture the maximum & do post processing
- Use creative control over your camera Manual settings. This will give you greater depth of field
- Make photography a Priority – Don’t rush to multiple locations. Photography is all about patience, perseverance & passion. Find time to create great images
- Hire a Rental Taxi/Car for travel to have controls on stopovers for taking images. Utilize opportunity to stop over & capture great images
- Dress appropriately for travel shoots as some places the dress code is important to follow
- Never use a flash /reflectors or external lights. Keep it natural as much as possible
- Get at the Peak, have a bird eye view. The Higher point to over look the entire city or town. This will give you the feelings of conquer of the world. Find an Exotic place everywhere you go, love with nature
- Meet the leaders of the places you are visiting, engage in small talks, the networking & close liaison will guide you to the future course of action
- Protect against theft /missing of equipment’s. Take an Insurance cover against any potential theft or damage to equipment’s. If you are not using costly equipment’s on any particular day, keep them in Hotel locker/ Safe Custody. Keep registration number of equipment’s with you for speedy claims
- Make sure your equipment’s are stored in easy to carry bag, your batteries are charged & you have sufficient space on your data cards for image storage. Travel Light but ensure you are fully equipped
- Get off the beaten path. Be ready to explore/venture out true nature destination by foot and away from the crowd. Be at your own for capturing the best; take help of locals if you lose your way back. Must carry the Hotel Business card to get back to Hotel easily
- Keep a back up of your images; use Google Drive/Cloud Space for storage apart from saving it on Storage Device.
- Ensure post processing & editing of images. Use software like Light Room, Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. Post processing is integral part of travel photographer workflow. Spend time in Post Processing learning
- In Travel Photography, it is the knowledge, experience & creativity of photographer which makes him/her to capture the great images
- It is better to invest in learning existing camera setting & benefits rather buying & investing in another costly equipment’s. Never stop your learning photography tutorials
- Travelling is blessing; it makes you to learn the world people, art, culture, food habits, their history etc. Never stop travelling
- Don’t spend your entire trip looking through the lens. Enjoy some time travelling & enjoy the rides
- Trust your instinct & feel safe, don’t let your guard down, Feel confident & put a bold face in difficult situations
- Be human while travelling, respect people, culture & their belief system. If you have promised them must honor the commitments. If you told them that you would send pic, you must send them. Give back to society. Be authentic & sensitive
